In today’s post, I am inviting you to write about your faith. I want to share a writing prompt that you can use to tell a story from your faith journey. If you have ever struggled to explain to someone else what your faith means to you or wondered how to begin your spiritual narrative, this exercise provides a specific focal point to help you share one or two snapshots about your life of faith.
All you need for this exercise is:
- a piece of paper and a writing utensil or a computer with a composition app
- a short, uninterrupted period of time, probably 10–20 minutes
The goal is simple:
Write your thoughts in response to the prompt. Don’t worry about correct grammar or punctuation. Don’t worry about organizing your thoughts. Don’t even worry about sticking closely to the prompt. Just put words onto the page.
Here’s your prompt:
Write about a scripture passage or hymn that means something to you and has shaped your faith, for better or worse. When did you encounter that scripture or hymn? What was your life like at that time? Why did it matter to you? How has it affected the way you view God? Who are you today because of that scripture or hymn?
If you’d like to share about your writing experience after doing this exercise, please leave a comment below!
