Advent with the Earth: Day 3 (Dec. 5)

What do stars have to do with justice? For Amos, everything.

Life with the Maker of Stars

Amos 5:1 – 17

“Seek the Lord and live, . . .
The one who made the Pleiades and Orion
and turns deep darkness into the morning
and darkens the day into night,
who calls for the water of the sea
and pours it out on the surface of the earth
the Lord is [this one’s] name, . . .”
– Amos 5:6a, 8, NRSVUE

What do stars have to do with justice? For Amos, everything.

When Amos invokes God as a maker of stars and giver of nights and days in contrast to people who are “turn[ing] justice to wormwood” (5:7), he casts justice as part of God’s good, beautiful, and magnificent creative work. Just as God made constellations with stars, God made life characterized by justice for all creatures. When people seek God the Creator, they will find this life.

What might stars show you about the maker of justice?
