Home Is Where the Water Is
Psalm 104
“You make springs gush forth in the valleys;
they flow between the hills,
giving drink to every wild animal;
the wild asses quench their thirst.
By the streams the birds of the air have their habitation;
they sing among the branches.
From your lofty abode you water the mountains;
the earth is satisfied with the fruit of your work.”
– Psalm 104:10 – 13, NRSVUE
How does a place become a home? Safety? Community? Family? Traditions? Hospitality? What about water?
In Psalm 104, the psalmist highlights a series of places that God has created to be homes for various creatures. A key ingredient for these diverse habitats is water. Because God has brought water to “valleys,” “mountains,” “field,” and “sea,” animals and plants find and make homes in all of these places (vv. 10, 13, 16, 25). In God’s hands, water fosters biodiversity, inclusivity, and belonging for creation.
